Cooperation

The goal of Governments in establishing the EMG was to enhance cooperation on environmental activities between the UN agencies, funds and programmes and multilateral environmental agreements. Such cooperation is based on an identification of issues on the international environmental agenda where EMG members’ collective and coordinated efforts are needed. EMG serves as a platform for bringing together all the diverse perspectives, expertise and strengths of the UN system in addressing those issues.

Efforts include helping ensure that development of new initiatives is informed by and compatible with processes and activities in the UN system at large. Members are engaged in information exchange and stocktaking. EMG facilitates the development of tools, training material and collective approaches to management and programming where needed. Ultimately efforts are geared towards promoting synergy and complementarity between activities and coherence in assisting member states in their efforts to address environmental change.
