IMG on Green Economy

Green Economy

There is growing realization of the potential that transiting to a “green economy” holds not only asa short-term response to multiple global crises, but also for longer-term sustainable development and poverty alleviation.

The 15th senior officials meeting of the Environment Management Group (EMG) in September 2009 set up a new Issue Management Group (IMG) on a “green economy” to assess how the UN system can more coherently support countries in making the transition to a “green economy” and work on joint and consistent messaging on measures needed to support this transition.

Through consultations with the EMG members, the Terms of Reference of the IMG on a Green Economy have been developed, detailing the process, budget and time-frame. These consultations emphasized the need for a forward-looking approach, relevance at the regional and country level and for the work of the IMG to build on, and be complementary to, ongoing interagency and intergovernmental processes.

The Issue Management Group has met several times and its members have prepared a joint report documenting how the UN system and Bretton Woods institutions can collectively assist countries in making this transition, The report was launched on 14th December 2011.
