IMG on Sustainability Management

Sustainability Management

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has referred to climate change as the “defining challenge of our time”. He is committed to lead by example by developing an outstanding climate-neutral approach for the UN’s premises and operations.

The UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination has therefore adopted a decision on moving towards a climate-neutral United Nations.

In 2008 a network of climate neutral focal points (know as an Issue Management Group or IMG) was set up across the agencies, funds and programmes of the UN system to implement this decision. The results of their combined efforts were presented in the report Moving Towards a Climate Neutral UN.

In 2010 responsibility for coordinating the IMG moved to the Sustainable United Nations team, based in Paris.  The IMG was re-launched with a broader mandate, including sustainable procurement and sustainability management. It is now called the Issue Management Group on Sustainability Management.

Greening the Blue is a new campaign and website which supports the work of the IMG on Sustainability Management.  It was launched on 4 June 2010 by the Sustainable United Nations facility and provides a range of resources for UN staff, the general public and IMG sustainability management focal points.

You will continue to find IMG meeting information, documents and formal decisions on this EMG web page on sustainability management.  Please also visit the secure Focal Point Area on the Greening the Blue website for more technical guidance, detailed information on methodologies and reporting obligations, and shared resources.Greening the Blue
